Guatemala is a corridor that has been in the Flying Swans development funnel through consortium partner Boskalis. Boskalis has acquired a ground position on the east coast of Guatemala and is planning to develop a new terminal there, as shown on the image. Boskalis’ position and work already done in Guatemala, in combination with the probable infrastructure gap reported by importers indicate that there may be business opportunities for Flying Swans to develop. To explore this prospect further, FSF have started a business opportunity scan in Guatemala. This business opportunity scan will continue into 2022.

Guatemala produces a large amount of high-quality fruit, most notably bananas but also avocados and mangoes. As of now, regional, and American importers are dominating the production, while European importers will go much further, as far as Peru and Panama to source bananas. Early research indicates that poor hinterland connection and congested port infrastructure are part of the reason why European importers are not active in Guatemala.
